From time to time, clients may experience significant stressors which exceed their ability to cope and send them into a state of crisis and dysregulation. This can look very different for each individual, and individual experiences can range from thoughts of suicide, to the onset of panic attacks, or even significant bouts of anger or destructive outbursts. For peer supports, case managers, therapists, and other clinicians, these situations often present as quite challenging and difficult to manage.

Balancing Professional Boundaries and Self Care for THWs
Health Careers Center Room 260
John Parsons, Rural Engagement Analyst, Office of Recovery and Resilience
Successful outcomes largely depend upon the quality of interpersonal relationships with people receiving services. Traditional Health Workers must maintain a balance between being supportive, empathic, and understanding, yet professional at the same time. In a trauma-informed and inclusive Human Services setting, monitoring the risk of boundary crossings and other ethical issues is a constant process. Since work scenarios are constantly in flux, the worker must be alert to possible boundary crossings and how to communicate effectively with clients and coworkers to prevent confusion and harm. This training explores the nature of boundary issues by looking at different risk areas, offering tips and best practices.
